Get your yard and trees ready before the holidays hit!
1. Trim Trees Back from Your Home
- Cut branches away from soffits, gutters, and rooflines before hanging holiday lights.
- Keep at least 5-10 feet of clearance to prevent damage from wind or rubbing branches.
- Clear limbs away from driveways and walkways where decorations or cords will go.
2. Clear Out Dead Limbs & Weak Branches
- Remove dead, cracked, or hanging branches before winter storms.
- Check large oaks and pines for hidden decay or fungus that can cause mid-winter breaks.
- Look for limbs over vehicles, roofs, or play areas - those are high risk.
3. Clean Up Around Rooflines & Gutters
- After trimming, clean gutters and downspouts - falling leaves + twigs can clog drains.
- Blow leaves off the roof to prevent rot and water pooling.
- Make sure all roof edges and soffits are clear for holiday light clips.
4. Prep for Holiday Lighting
- Never attach lights directly to trees that touch your roof or power lines.
- Keep cords and extension plugs off the ground and away from wet spots.
- Use outdoor-rated cords and LED lights for safety and efficiency.
- Consider pre-trimming or shaping front yard trees for the perfect holiday photo backdrop.
5. Storm Season & Winter Wind Readiness
- Florida may not get snow - but we get storms year-round!
- Schedule a quick Arborist Safety Inspection to spot weak roots or storm-damaged trees.
- Check that palm fronds and seed pods are trimmed - they can become wind-blown projectiles.
6. Year-End Yard Clean-Up
- Mulch or haul away fallen limbs and leaves to prevent pests and mold.
- Shape trees and shrubs before spring growth begins - it's the perfect time for pruning.
- Ask about winter storm standby service for emergency removals.
